After the Bryan brothers put the USA on the board, it was all up to Mardy Fish to stage a historic comeback. The pressure proved to be too much, however, as Fish fell to David Ferrer in four well-fought sets. There were too many missed opportunities by Fish, and Ferrer did what he does best: not miss.
Fish talked to the press afterward about the challenges of facing Ferrer. “He’s one of the best movers in the world,” Fish said. “Makes you play extra balls. He can hit passing shots extremely well. He’s 6 in the world for a reason, and that’s why.”
Missed opportunities by Fish and incredible playing by Ferrer turned this into the longest 4-set match in US Davis Cup history. Fish reflected on his missed opportunities saying, “Yeah, I mean, I had a lot of chances out there. You know, you take advantage of some of those breakpoints, not even all of them, and I could win that match in straight sets.”
Instead, Ferrer wins 7-5, 7-6, 5-7, 7-6 and takes Spain to the semifinals.
Even though the US didn’t win, this Davis Cup had incredible matches and an electric atmosphere. Even the players commented on the crowd. “This is the loudest Davis Cup I’ve ever been a part of,” Fish said. “So I’ll certainly remember that.”
